Why It Matters

Samadhi, Patanjali's ultimate state, describes consciousness unified with its object—complete integration where fragmentation ceases and suffering dissolves. While yoga's spiritual samadhi transcends psychology, the psychological correlate maps perfectly onto CBT's treatment endpoint: integrated functioning where automatic reactions are replaced by intentional responses, where internal conflict gives way to aligned values-action, where symptomatic suffering resolves into normal experience. In major depression, rumination, and anxiety disorders, clients experience consciousness fragmented: part wanting safety, part craving connection; part believing catastrophe, part knowing rationally it's unlikely; part paralyzed, part pushing harder. CBT gradually moves toward samadhi-like integration through cognitive restructuring, behavioral alignment, and values clarification. As distorted thoughts are corrected, avoidance behaviors replaced with approach, and values integrated throughout daily life, a unified functioning emerges. The fragmented, conflicted consciousness finds coherence. Patanjali recognized that psychological mastery culminates not in managing symptoms but in achieving integrated wholeness where mind, emotion, and action flow coherently. This vision transcends symptom-reduction to encompass the deeper goal of psychological integration modern CBT increasingly recognizes as essential for lasting recovery.
