Santosha, one of Patanjali's niyamas (observances), teaches acceptance and contentment with present reality. Trauma survivors typically exist in perpetual resistance: fighting intrusive thoughts, battling body sensations, rejecting emotional states. This resistance consumes enormous psychological energy and prevents healing. Santosha invites a radical shift—accepting the reality of trauma history, nervous system dysregulation, and current emotional activation without self-judgment or struggle. During EMDR, as difficult material emerges, santosha allows clients to tolerate activation without desperate escape. Patanjali understood that consciousness transforms not through force but through accepting what is. For trauma healing, this becomes revolutionary: the more survivors fight their own nervous system response, the more entrenched it becomes. Santosha creates conditions for genuine processing. By accepting activation as part of healing rather than failure, clients relax enough for bilateral stimulation to work. Acceptance paradoxically becomes the portal to transformation.
