Svadhyaya, self-study or self-examination, is a foundational niyama in Patanjali's system emphasizing that transformation requires intimate knowledge of one's own mind and patterns. For language learners, svadhyaya means developing metacognitive awareness: observing one's own learning patterns, identifying cognitive blocks, recognizing emotional responses to linguistic challenge, and understanding personal learning styles. Many language learners unconsciously repeat ineffective strategies, blame external factors, or remain unaware of their specific phonetic difficulties or grammatical confusions. Svadhyaya practices cultivate the observing awareness that reveals these patterns.
