Vairagya translates as dispassion or non-attachment, but Patanjali clarifies it doesn't mean indifference or emotional numbness. Rather, it's the freedom from compulsive grasping and desperate control. For anxiously attached individuals, vairagya addresses the core wound: the exhausting need to hold relationships through constant vigilance, accommodation, and emotional labor. Yoga Sutras teach that clinging intensifies suffering because it's rooted in false beliefs about what love requires. True connection, paradoxically, arises when we release the illusion that we must earn love through perfect behavior. Vairagya doesn't eliminate desire for connection—it transforms the quality of that desire from desperate neediness to authentic relating. Through meditation practice, individuals observe their clinging patterns with compassion rather than judgment. As the nervous system learns safety through yoga, the compulsive grip naturally loosens. This creates space for genuine intimacy where partners connect as whole beings rather than fragmented needs seeking completion.
