Vairagya translates as dispassion or non-attachment—not apathy, but freedom from compulsive identification with mental phenomena. Patanjali teaches that liberation comes through witnessing thoughts without being enslaved by them. In contemporary holistic mental health, vairagya becomes the antidote to rumination, catastrophizing, and identity fusion with anxiety or depression. Clients learn to notice intrusive thoughts without believing them represent truth or defining who they are. This shifts the therapeutic relationship with difficult mental states from suppression (which often backfires) to compassionate observation. Vairagya enables the psychological flexibility emphasized in acceptance and commitment therapy while honoring the deeper spiritual dimensions of non-attachment.
