In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali identifies vritti—the fluctuations or waves of the mind—as the fundamental mechanism through which beliefs arise and persist. These mental patterns form through repeated impressions (samskaras) that shape our perception of reality. By recognizing beliefs as temporary thought-waves rather than absolute truths, we gain the psychological distance needed to examine and modify them. This distinction between the observer and the observed thoughts is central to transforming limiting beliefs. Patanjali teaches that mastery comes through witnessing these vrittis without identification, creating space for new neural pathways and belief systems to emerge. This ancient psychological model directly addresses how beliefs crystallize in consciousness and how deliberate practice can reshape them.
