Belonging Without Conditions

Creating organizational cultures where participation is unconditionally welcomed regardless of productivity, purity, or perfect ideological alignment.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia taught that divine love required nothing but itself—no performance, no worthiness, no conditions. Organizing rooted in this principle creates communities where people belong simply because they exist. This challenges typical organizing cultures that conditionally value people based on their utility: How much will they volunteer? Are they ideologically pure? Will they stay committed? Belonging-without-conditions flips this, asserting that every person has inherent worth deserving community investment. In practice, this means welcoming people in their complexity—veterans with PTSD, formerly incarcerated people, those struggling with addiction, people with inconsistent attendance, those still processing capitalist consciousness. Rather than screening people out, communities practice deep integration, providing support and care while building collective power. This approach expands organizing's reach to those most marginalized precisely because they've been told their belonging is conditional elsewhere. Organizations practicing this develop unexpected resilience because they're not dependent on a small cadre of dedicated activists but sustained by broader communities who feel genuinely claimed and valued regardless of what they can contribute.
