Blessing as Release

In Rabia's tradition, blessing represents alignment with divine will and acceptance of what is. Parents blessing their adult children means consciously releasing the fantasy of control and explicitly affirming their right to separate, choose differently, and build their own lives. This is more powerful than it appears: many adult children carry an unspoken question—"Does my parent truly accept my separateness?" Verbal, intentional blessing answers this. A parent might bless a child's unconventional career choice, different faith path, or decision to relocate, not by approving all details but by affirming: "I see you're building your own life, and I'm genuinely proud of your courage." Blessing as release transforms the parent from gatekeeper of approval to genuine elder who celebrates the child's autonomy. This practice is particularly healing when children have felt parentally conditional or controlled. Explicit blessing gives permission to become fully themselves.
