Community as Extended Ancestral Body

The vision of living community and ancestors as single continuous body where boundaries between past and present members dissolve.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia moved beyond individual mysticism to envision community bound by love—a gathering of souls devoted to shared spiritual awakening. This expanded vision illuminates how ancestor veneration naturally extends beyond family lineage to spiritual community. When we recognize ancestors as those who came before within our spiritual lineage, professional community, or chosen family, ancestral veneration becomes inclusive practice honoring all who contributed to our becoming. This resonates profoundly with African ubuntu ('I am because we are'), where community encompasses past, present, and future as single organism. Christian communion of saints describes similar vision; Indigenous peoples understand their entire nation across time as relational body. The practice involves identifying various communities we belong to—family, professional, spiritual, cultural—and consciously acknowledging ancestral contributors to each. This might include: honoring past teachers and mentors, recognizing spiritual lineage beyond blood relations, appreciating those who fought for rights we inherit, acknowledging cultural ancestors who shaped our traditions. Expanding ancestor veneration from family to community prevents ancestral practice from becoming isolated or narcissistic, grounding it instead in recognition that we are cells in larger body, always in conversation with ancestors who preceded us in all our communities.
