The Disease of Preference

The spiritual illness that arises when love becomes conditional and selective rather than universal, fracturing community bonds and breeding resentment.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love flows without discrimination, yet favoritism represents a spiritual sickness where affection becomes weaponized through selection. When we privilege certain people over others—whether family, friends, or allies—we fragment the unified field of belonging that holds communities together. This disease operates invisibly: the favored feel burdened by unearned status, while the overlooked internalize unworthiness. Rabia's tradition reveals that every act of favoritism costs not just the excluded person, but the entire web of relationships. The favored become isolated on pedestals, the excluded withdraw into shame, and witnesses learn that love is transactional. In communities, this disease spreads like infection: one favoritism spawns defensive favoritism elsewhere, each person protecting their own. The cost accumulates in fractured trust, hidden resentments, and the slow erosion of collective belonging that sustains human flourishing.
