Divine Love Beyond Human Preference

The practice of loving all beings equally as expressions of divine presence, dissolving the ego-based attachments that create favoritism.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love flows from recognizing the divine in all creation, not from personal preference or advantage. When we practice this principle, favoritism loses its foundation—we cannot simultaneously love God fully and privilege certain people over others. This concept challenges the psychological pattern where we naturally favor those who benefit us, those similar to us, or those who enhance our status. By cultivating devotion to something greater than ourselves, we interrupt the unconscious bias that makes us treat insiders better than outsiders. In communities, this transforms how we distribute resources, attention, and opportunities. The cost of favoritism becomes visible: it fragments our spiritual practice and betrays our deepest commitments. Rabia's example shows that transcending favoritism isn't about guilt or moral effort alone, but about redirecting love toward its truest object.
