Divine Love Without Distinction

The practice of loving all beings equally as reflections of the Divine, dissolving the ego's tendency to rank some people above others.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that genuine love transcends preference and attachment to particular outcomes. When we practice divine love without distinction, we recognize that favoritism arises from the ego's need to secure belonging through selective attachment. This concept invites us to examine whom we elevate and whom we diminish, and to notice how fear of abandonment drives us to create hierarchies of worth. By cultivating love that doesn't require reciprocation or special status, we interrupt the psychological pattern of favoritism at its root. This doesn't mean abandoning healthy boundaries; rather, it means recognizing the common dignity in all beings. The cost of favoritism—broken trust, resentment, exclusion—dissolves when we align our hearts with a love that doesn't keep score or demand loyalty tests.
