Fanaa, or annihilation of self in Divine love, represents Rabia's highest teaching. This mystical dissolution of ego creates space for something greater to move through us. In ancestral practice, fanaa manifests as releasing our need to control outcomes and instead aligning with the accumulated wisdom of those who came before. When we venerate ancestors with genuine fanaa, we stop insisting on our own way and become vessels for generational wisdom. This dissolves the destructive patterns we've inherited and amplifies the virtues. Across traditions, this appears as possession in African religions, channeling in mediumship, or the humble listening cultivated in indigenous councils. Rather than ego-driven decision-making, we allow ancestral perspective to inform our choices. This isn't loss of self but expansion of self to include the collective consciousness of our lineage.
