Intergenerational Belonging Through Digital Presence

Belonging was central to Rabia's understanding of spiritual life—humans exist in relationship to the Divine and to each other across time. Digital preservation offers new possibilities for intergenerational belonging: grandchildren can encounter ancestors' voices and wisdom; communities can maintain connection to formative teachers and leaders. Yet this belonging must be understood as transformation, not repetition. When younger generations interact with preserved personalities, they engage with someone from another time meeting their own era. This creates discontinuity as well as continuity. Intergenerational belonging through digital presence requires acknowledging both: the genuine connection across time and the real differences between living and preserved, past and present. It prevents both nostalgic fantasy (treating the preserved as unchanging ideals) and cold dismissal (treating them as irrelevant data). Instead, it honors how the dead continue to shape and teach the living through living engagement with their memory.
