The Legacy of Devotion and Handing Over the Torch

Consciously transmitting values and wisdom to adolescents through lived example and deliberate mentoring, preparing them to lead their own lives.

Why It Matters

Rabia's influence extended far beyond her lifetime; her students carried her teachings forward, each translating her devotion into their own practice. Parents are also legacy-makers. The adolescent years are when this transmission becomes visible and conscious. Rather than assuming adolescents will simply absorb values, Rabia's approach suggests explicit mentoring: 'Here is what I have learned about love, resilience, integrity, community. Here is why it matters. Here is how I live it—imperfectly. Now make it your own.' This might include sharing family stories, modeling values under pressure, asking teens what principles they want to build their lives upon, and gradually releasing responsibility to them. The parent who can step back from control and instead become a trusted advisor supporting the adolescent's own emerging leadership is handing over the torch. This transforms the parent-teen relationship from hierarchy to intergenerational dialogue and prepares the teen to become an adult capable of their own devotion and contribution to community.
