Pure Intention as Foundation

Examining your deepest motivations for parenting rules and consequences to ensure they serve the child's good, not parental ego or control.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual teaching emphasized that intention (niyyah) determines the worth of all actions—you could perform correct external acts but with a corrupted heart. This principle illuminates a critical distinction between authoritative and authoritarian parenting: the parent's true motivation. Authoritarian parents may enforce rules rooted in fear, perfectionism, shame, or a need to dominate. Authoritative parents regularly examine their intentions: Are we setting this boundary because our child needs protection and guidance, or because we need to feel powerful? Do consequences teach and restore, or punish and humiliate? Rabia's legacy asks parents to cultivate purity of intention—to parent from love and commitment to the child's wholeness, not from wounded ego. This doesn't mean being permissive; it means your firmness flows from genuine care. When children sense pure intention behind parental guidance, they respond with cooperation rooted in trust rather than compliance rooted in fear. This builds authentic legacy.
