Qalb: The Purified Heart's Witness

Using the Arabic concept of qalb (heart-center) to detect when favoritism originates from ego rather than genuine care.

Rabia
Why It Matters

In Rabia's Sufi tradition, the qalb is not merely emotional but the seat of spiritual discernment and truth-seeing. Favoritism invariably arises from the nafs—the ego-self seeking security, status, or control through preference-making. The purified heart, cultivated through sincere devotion, can distinguish between love rooted in Divine unity and love contaminated by personal agenda. When we show favoritism, the qalb knows the difference: genuine care extends equally, while preference protects the self. Rabia practiced radical honesty about her inner states precisely to purify her qalb from hidden motivations. For modern communities, this means creating practices of introspection where members examine whether their loyalties serve connection or self-interest. The cost of unexamined favoritism is a hardened heart, unable to access the compassion that binds communities together.
