Rida: Acceptance Beyond Preference

The Islamic principle of radical acceptance that dissolves the ego's need to favor outcomes, dismantling favoritism at its root.

Why It Matters

Rida—divine contentment and acceptance—stands as the antidote to favoritism in Rabia's spiritual framework. This concept asks: what if we released the need to prefer certain outcomes, certain people, certain versions of how life should unfold? Rabia practiced rida by accepting God's will without complaint or ranking of circumstances. When we practice favoritism, we implicitly reject what is in favor of what we prefer, creating suffering for ourselves and others. Rida teaches that this rejection costs us peace, authenticity, and genuine belonging. The practice involves noticing where we resist reality because it doesn't match our preferences—the promotion we didn't get, the friend who chose someone else, the community that didn't favor our vision. By cultivating rida, we stop weaponizing preference and instead align with life as it actually unfolds, strengthening our capacity for real community and legacy.
