The Community's Becoming: Shared Telos

A vision of community as having a collective purpose or destiny that each generation helps unfold, making intergenerational responsibility sacred work toward shared becoming.

Why It Matters

Rabia's love was oriented toward union with the Divine, a telos that gave her life direction. In ubuntu context, the community has a shared telos—a direction it is becoming. This might be survival, flourishing, cultural continuity, healing from trauma, or spiritual awakening. Each generation's responsibility is to discern and advance this shared becoming. Ancestors cleared certain paths; elders maintain and deepen them; youth extend and transform them. When children understand that they are participating in their community's larger unfolding purpose, intergenerational responsibility becomes meaningful rather than burdensome. You are not simply maintaining what was but midwifing what is trying to emerge. This requires intergenerational conversation: youth bring new vision, elders bring wisdom about what endures, ancestors whisper about what was tried before. The shared telos creates unity across time while allowing each generation to contribute distinctively. It answers the question: Why pass anything on? Because the community's becoming matters, and you are essential to its unfolding.
