Tawhid: Unity Consciousness in Relationship

Tawhid is the experience of divine unity—recognizing the same sacred core in all beings, which collapses the us-versus-them mentality that makes fitting in necessary.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Tawhid, the Islamic concept of absolute unity and oneness, became in Rabia's hands a revolutionary tool for belonging. If all existence shares one sacred essence, then the boundaries between self and other, insider and outsider, become less absolute. You don't need to fit into a group because there is fundamentally no separation between you and the group. Rabia's radical love extended to all beings from this recognition of tawhid. In modern community work, tawhid translates to seeing the shared humanity—or shared struggle, shared mortality, shared yearning—that connects all people. Communities built on tawhid-consciousness don't require members to fit predetermined roles; they recognize each person as a unique expression of the same underlying unity. This doesn't mean ignoring real differences; rather, it means those differences exist within recognized fundamental connection. Practically, tawhid invites a practice: in any group, pause and consciously recognize the same life force, the same essential aliveness, in each person—including those different from you. This shifts the nervous system from evaluating fit to recognizing belonging.
