The Undifferentiated Heart

Rabia's practice of loving without distinction or preference, revealing how favoritism fragments the unity of divine and human connection.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love flows equally to all creation, without preference or partiality. The Undifferentiated Heart is the spiritual discipline of perceiving each person and moment with the same depth of care, dissolving the ego's tendency to rank, prefer, and exclude. When we practice favoritism, we fracture this unity—elevating some while diminishing others. Rabia's tradition reveals that favoritism costs us the wholeness we seek: we become trapped in the anxiety of maintaining hierarchies, lose the peace of non-judgment, and damage the community bonds that sustain us. By cultivating an undifferentiated heart, we recognize that showing preference to certain people or circumstances distances us from love itself. This concept invites us to examine where we secretly believe some relationships matter more than others, and to notice how that belief separates us from both the sacred and from genuine belonging.
