The Annihilation of False Self

Rumi's concept of fana—annihilation or ego-dissolution—directly addresses why souls return: to progressively erase the illusion of separate selfhood. Each lifetime strips away another layer of false identity, another wall between the lover and the Beloved. Karma in this framework is not external punishment but the natural consequence of clinging to ego; reincarnation becomes the medicine that dissolves these attachments. The soul returns again and again until it realizes its true nature is already merged with the divine. This is radical spiritual optimism: no incarnation is wasted because each one brings you closer to the recognition that you and the Beloved were never separate. The journey through multiple lifetimes is the path of progressive awakening to unity.
