Annihilating the Secondary to Perceive the First

The principle that perceiving divine reality requires releasing attachment to secondary causes and ordinary perception, acknowledging only God as ultimately real.

Rumi
Why It Matters

Rumi teaches that creation and creatures appear to have independent existence and causal power only because the perceiver lacks clarity. With perfected vision, one sees that only God exists and acts; all apparent secondary causes are transparent to divine action. This is not philosophical idealism but mystical perception: the direct, transformative seeing that reality consists only of the Divine and Its manifestation. Christian mysticism, particularly in Eckhart's teaching, expresses similar insight: God is so absolutely reality itself that all creatures possess being only derivatively, like rays of sunlight possessing light only as transmitted from the sun. This insight liberates the soul from two opposites: neither grasping at creation as if it were ultimate nor despising creation as unreal, but seeing it precisely as manifestation of the One Reality. The practical implication is profound: if God alone is truly real and active, then fear, ambition, and personal striving become absurd. The soul can release these and move instead from spontaneous alignment with divine will. This releases enormous energy previously consumed by ego-driven striving. Contemplative practice involves progressively releasing investment in secondary causes—other people's opinions, personal safety, achievement—and instead trusting perception of divine action. The shift is gradual and requires repeated practice, yet even small movements in this direction bring peace and authenticity.
