Sohbet: The Healing Power of Authentic Conversation

Creating safe spaces for honest dialogue where spiritual experience and trauma can be witnessed and integrated.

Rumi
Why It Matters

Sohbet, or spiritual conversation, is central to Sufi practice—a gathering where seekers speak authentically about their inner journey while others listen with compassionate presence. Unlike confession before authority figures or therapeutic sessions framed as hierarchical treatment, sohbet creates peer witness to both breakthrough and breakdown. Religious trauma often involved isolation, silencing, or conversations where personal experience was invalidated or reinterpreted through institutional frameworks. This concept reclaims the healing power of being truly heard. Survivors sharing their experiences in sohbet—speaking their trauma, their questions, their recovering joy—find validation that their experience was real and their responses were human. The practice of listening to others' journeys reduces shame and isolation while building community beyond doctrine. Sohbet requires vulnerability and safety in equal measure; survivors can learn to both offer and receive authentic witness. This conversational practice becomes a container for integration: naming what happened, grieving what was lost, and gradually rebuilding trust in one's own wisdom and perception.
