Economic Justice as Reasonable Constraint

The principle that personal financial optimization should be constrained by broader economic justice, refusing to exploit others' biases for personal gain.

Why It Matters

A distinctive dimension of Yacob's philosophy is his commitment to universal human dignity and justice—his reasoning extends beyond personal flourishing to the collective good. Applied to behavioral economics, this means individuals with knowledge of biases have a moral obligation not to exploit that knowledge for personal advantage. A salesperson who understands anchoring bias, for example, faces a choice: use this knowledge to manipulate customers into overpaying, or to help them recognize and resist anchoring. An investor who understands herd behavior faces a choice: profit from predictable crowd mistakes, or help others develop better judgment. This concept argues that reason includes recognizing our interdependence and shared humanity. Personal wealth gained by systematically exploiting others' cognitive vulnerabilities ultimately degrades the dignity of both parties and the economic system. Economic justice, from this perspective, requires that those with financial knowledge and power constrain their self-interest in service of broader dignity and fairness. This doesn't mean self-sacrifice without limits, but rather integrating others' dignity into one's own reasoning about financial choices. It suggests that the most profound financial wisdom includes asking not just 'What maximizes my wealth?' but 'What strengthens justice and dignity for all?'
