Addiction is a compulsive movement of citta toward relief — a powerful saṃskāra shaped by the experience of pain reduced, if only briefly. The substance or behavior is not the disorder; it is the solution the mind has found for suffering it does not yet know another way to bear. Treatment that addresses only the behavior while leaving the underlying suffering untouched consistently fails.
