Being an informed and empowered patient

An informed patient is not a difficult patient — they are a more effective partner in their own care, and most clinicians prefer them when pressed. Being informed means knowing your medical history, understanding your diagnoses, knowing the names and purposes of your medications, and understanding the evidence base for recommended treatments. It also means knowing your values and being able to communicate them: what matters to you, what risks you are willing to take, and what kind of life you are trying to protect.
