Indigenous coming-of-age traditions

Coming-of-age rites in indigenous traditions do something modern culture has largely lost: they make the transition from child to adult a communal, witnessed event with real stakes. The adolescent is not left to discover who they are alone, in private confusion — they are brought through the threshold by elders who have made the crossing themselves. The loss of these structures leaves a real emptiness.
