Learning communities and their design

Learning communities are not groups of individuals studying the same material but intentional social environments where the quality of attention, inquiry, and mutual accountability transforms what each member is capable of understanding. The śrama (hermitage) of the Vedic tradition, the medieval studium generale, the contemporary community of practice, and the online learning cohort all instantiate the same structural insight: learning accelerates in the presence of genuine peers who bring different perspectives and hold each other to the standard of honest inquiry. Design matters: the conditions that produce genuine learning communities are specific and require deliberate cultivation.
