Leaving a community

Leaving a community you have genuinely belonged to — a church, a political tribe, a close-knit neighborhood or organization — is a form of grief that does not always get named as such. You are not only losing the people; you are losing the version of yourself that existed in relation to them. The leaving that happens with honesty, without slamming doors, is harder and more dignified than the alternative.
