Medications and how they work

Every medication is a molecule that works by binding to specific sites in the body — receptors, enzymes, transporters — to either enhance or inhibit a biological process, and understanding this at even a general level helps make sense of both its intended effects and its side effects. Medications work within a context: your other medications, your kidney and liver function, your age, your nutrition, and sometimes your genetics all influence how a drug behaves in your particular body. Taking medications thoughtfully — knowing what you are taking, why, and what to watch for — is part of the basic literacy of modern healthcare.
