Pilgrimage and sacred time

To go on pilgrimage is to remove ordinary time and replace it with purposive time — every step now pointed at something beyond the everyday. The Camino, the Hajj, the Kumbh Mela, the Lakota vision quest: all suspend the usual categories and allow the pilgrim to be remade by the journey itself. The destination is often not the point.
