When children cannot speak what they carry, they will sometimes play it instead — acting out in the sandpit what the mouth cannot yet form into words. The therapist who watches play is reading a very honest book, written by someone who has not yet learned to lie convincingly. The wisdom here is that the child already knows what it needs; play is how it asks.
