Those who live publicly — politicians, artists, executives, public intellectuals — face the particular challenge of a legacy that is partly out of their control, shaped by forces that did not know them and will not be fair to them. The impulse to manage how one will be remembered is understandable and usually at least partially futile. The more honest investment is in being someone whose actual actions hold up under scrutiny.
