The community is where the spiritual life is formed and also where it is most often wounded — the place of belonging and the place of exclusion, the source of depth and the instrument of control. Every tradition carries this tension: the ideals enshrined in its texts and the all-too-human institutions built in their name. To remain in a community consciously, or to leave it consciously, is itself a form of spiritual work.
