Reputation and its care

Reputation is what others carry of you in their minds when you are not present — and it is built not in the impressive moments but in the ordinary ones, in how you behaved when it cost something to behave well. Its care is not the same as its management; managed reputations tend to ring hollow under any serious pressure. The person whose reputation is simply who they are has nothing to maintain and nothing to protect.
