Responsibilities — the other side of rights

Rights-based discourse, when it operates without a corresponding account of responsibility, produces a moral vocabulary that is all claim and no obligation — useful for cataloguing grievances but insufficient for building collective life. Every tradition that has thought seriously about justice has insisted on the reciprocal structure: rights and duties are two sides of the same coin, and a society in which everyone knows their rights but no one acknowledges their responsibilities to others is not a just society but an armed standoff. Juana's world made clear that duties imposed without corresponding rights are mere servitude; the examined moral life needs both.
