Technology and inequality — who benefits who pays

Every major technology in history has distributed its benefits unevenly — the printing press first served the literate; the railroad first served capital; the internet first served the connected. This is not the accident of each technology but the pattern of them all. To examine who benefits and who pays is not to be against technology but to ask the question that technology itself does not answer.
