The death of a parent

The death of a parent, even when expected and even when the relationship was difficult, removes a particular buffer between oneself and one's own mortality — the sense that there is still a generation standing between you and death retreats. It can also release decades of grief held in ambivalence, unrealized hope, or the longing for something the parent could never give. This domain looks at the particular territory of parental loss with the complexity it deserves.
