The examined relationship with plants

We have allowed ourselves to imagine that plants are passive — background, decoration, resource — and this imagination is both philosophically questionable and practically costly. The person who has actually grown food knows that a plant is a collaborator, not a product, and the relationship has its own terms that are not negotiable. Nasreddin would say: the thing that feeds you deserves, at minimum, your attention.
