The time capsule is a material expression of the desire to reach forward — to touch a future person in a specific, intended way. It is usually tender in its assumptions: that the world will continue, that someone will open it, that the contents will matter. The letter buried in a box is a prayer as much as it is a communication: addressed to someone not yet born, by a hand now long still.
