What AI can and cannot do

AI can recognize, generate, translate, predict — and does all of these at scales and speeds no human can match. What it cannot do is want, suffer, or be accountable. The boundary between these capacities is less clear than either enthusiasts or critics prefer, and that ambiguity is itself significant.
