Wilderness asks questions that civilization does not know how to ask: What do you actually need? What are you when stripped of everything that was given to you? The answers are uncomfortable, which is why wilderness remains, despite all its advocates, so sparsely attended. Nasreddin valued it for exactly this reason: it was the one place that would not agree with you simply to keep the peace.
