Writing and creative legacy

Writing is one of the few forms of legacy that speaks in its maker's actual voice — the reader of a text written centuries ago has direct contact with something the writer intended, across the vast distances of time and culture. This is remarkable, and it explains the particular hunger to leave written things behind. The honest writer, though, knows that what persists depends entirely on what the work gives others, not on the writer's own feeling of significance.
