Did my work actually change anything, or just the paper trail?
You and your team spent years building something real. Now you wonder if any of it will outlast you. That's not vanity. It's an honest question, and it deserves an honest answer. But look closer at what you're really asking. You want to know if the field will keep your name on it. That is not the same question as whether the work held up. One is about memory. The other is about truth. You have let them blur together. You cannot control which one the field chooses. You can only ask the work itself to be true, and let memory do whatever it does without you. So stop waiting for the field to answer you. Go check the work instead.
Your name on the door was never the measure. Ask what moved because you pushed it — a question someone now asks differently, a method others use without crediting you. That moved. Choose to count what changed, not what remembers you. The field owes you nothing. The work owed the truth, and it got it.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can name three concrete things that changed because of the work, without reaching for citation counts.
- Your team stops arguing about credit and starts arguing about what's still unproven.
- You separate 'did it matter' from 'will they remember me' — and let the second one go.
- You choose the next question to chase because it's still open, not because you're afraid of fading.
