How do I actually lead by example, not just talk about it?

You tell the people you lead to be honest, to show up on time, to do the hard thing before the easy one. Now ask yourself: do you do these things? Or only when it's convenient, only when someone's watching? That is the whole problem. Not what you say in meetings. What you do after the meeting ends and no one is keeping score. This is not about finding the right leadership philosophy. It's about closing the gap between the standard you name and the life you actually live. You close it one day, one choice, at a time.

The idea is simple and already understood; what's missing is the daily discipline of acting on it, so the page leans almost entirely on guided action.

What’s really going on

You lead by example the moment you stop checking who's watching. Name one standard you demand of others — honesty, effort, punctuality. Hold yourself to it today, where it costs you something. Character is not a speech you give. It's what you do when no one is grading you.

A moveWrite down the one standard you ask of others most often but quietly excuse in yourself. Name it exactly, in one sentence.
A moveBefore you ask anything of your team today, do that one thing yourself first, without announcing it.
A moveWhen you catch yourself excusing your own shortcut, stop and ask: would I accept this from the person I lead?
A moveEach evening, write one line: where did you meet your own standard, and where did you let yourself off?
A moveAsk one person who works for you what they've noticed you excuse in yourself. Listen. Do not defend.

  • You'll know within a week whether your standard is real or just a slogan.
  • Your team will start holding themselves to it, because they've watched you do it first.
  • You'll stop needing speeches about character, because your conduct will be the speech.
  • The gap between what you ask of others and what you actually do will visibly shrink.
