How do I carry other people's hardest moments without breaking?

You sit with people on their worst days. You hear what they cannot say to anyone else. You carry it home, and it does not leave when you do. This is not weakness. It is the nature of the work you chose. But notice what you are actually doing when the weight feels unbearable. You are trying to hold their outcome, not just your effort. Their healing, their choices, their fate — none of that was ever in your hands. Only your attention, your skill, your next honest action — that is yours. You do not do this alone. Stop pretending you must carry it alone. Your team exists so no one person holds the whole weight. Use them. Say what is heavy before it crushes you. A pod that does not share the load is not a pod. It is just several people suffering privately in the same room.

This problem is less about new information and more about daily practice, so coaching carries most of the weight, with just enough teaching to anchor the one true distinction: what is yours and what is not.

What’s really going on

You were not given their lives to carry — only your response to them. Each day, choose the next right action in front of you: attend, help, decide, then set it down. The ones who break are the ones who try to hold what was never theirs to hold.

A moveName one thing from today that is not yours to carry, and say it aloud to your team before you leave.
A moveAt the end of each shift, write down what you did, not what you fixed. Your effort is yours. The outcome is not.
A moveBuild a handoff ritual: tell one teammate the weight you're still holding, then let them witness it instead of solving it.
A moveEach week, choose one task you can hand to someone else, and hand it.
A moveBefore you comfort someone else, check your own ledger. Name what you need, and ask for it plainly.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop confusing effort with outcome, and the guilt loosens.
  • Your team starts naming the weight out loud, instead of carrying it silently.
  • You build a daily practice of setting down what isn't yours.
  • You find which parts of the job are truly yours, and do those better.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
