How Do I Know Which Marketing Efforts Actually Work?

You say the data is hard to read. Look again — you have the data. What you lack is the will to decide while it is still incomplete. That is not a measurement problem. That is a courage problem. Every channel claims credit. Every report tells its own story, and you keep waiting for the one report that finally tells the truth. No such report exists. The causes are scattered across a hundred small moments, and no dashboard gathers them all in one place. So ask yourself honestly what you are waiting for. More data will not give you certainty — it will only give you more numbers to doubt. While you wait, the decision does not pause. It simply gets made badly, by delay, instead of well, by you.

The person already understands analytics; what they need is a method for deciding and acting under permanent uncertainty, so coaching leads over teaching.

What’s really going on

You will not get certainty, so stop waiting for it. Attribution is not a puzzle with one correct answer — it is a judgment you make again and again, with incomplete facts. Pick the most likely driver, act on that belief, and watch what follows. Adjust. That is the whole method.

A moveName the one decision you are stalling on right now, out loud or in writing.
A moveWrite your best guess at the top two drivers, using only the data you already have — no new reports.
A moveAct on that guess this week. Do not wait for more evidence to arrive.
A moveSet a fixed date to check what happened, and revise your guess then — not before.
A moveWhen a new report contradicts you, choose the reading that lets you move, not the one that excuses more waiting.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop treating attribution as a problem to solve once and start treating it as a call you make repeatedly.
  • You act on your best current guess instead of waiting for a perfect one.
  • You spend less time defending models and more time testing decisions.
  • You see clearly that most of the delay was fear of being wrong, not a lack of information.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
