How long can I keep paying for my own classroom?

You tell yourself this is just what good teachers do. It is not. A school that needs your wallet and your midnight hours to function is not asking for dedication — it is relying on your silence. You are not the only one doing this. Walk down the hall and you will find others buying pencils, staying late, saying nothing, each believing their exhaustion is private and personal. It is not private. It is a shared cost, carried alone by people who never compared notes. The fix is not a better attitude. It is naming the real numbers out loud, with others, and refusing to let an unfunded system run on your body and your money one more semester without a fight.

The reframe does most of the work; a little knowledge about naming and documenting costs makes the collective action possible.

What’s really going on

Not much longer, and you know it. You are not weak for struggling — you are absorbing costs that belong to the system. Stop calling this dedication. Name the number: what you spend, what you give up sleep for. Then fix only what is yours to fix, and push the rest back, together with others who carry the same weight.

A moveWrite down every dollar you've spent on your classroom this month. Show the number to your team, not just yourself.
A movePick one hard stop time for grading tonight. Agree on the same stop time with at least one other teacher this week.
A moveBring your documented costs and hours to a specific person with budget authority — not a complaint, a request with numbers attached.
A moveFind two other teachers doing the same unpaid work. Compare totals before you ask for anything.
A moveChoose one task this week that isn't actually yours. Say no to it, out loud, to the person who assigned it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A real number for what you've been absorbing, instead of a vague feeling of being tired
  • At least one boundary you held this week instead of quietly extending
  • A shared account of the cost, held by more than one person
  • A specific ask made to someone with the power to fund it
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
