I can make almost anyone say what I want. Should that worry me?

You already suspect the answer, or you would not have brought this to yourself. A skilled hand can shape a witness's words without ever telling them what to say. That is not a rare talent. It is a common one, sharpened by practice, and you have sharpened it well. The danger is not that you are cruel or dishonest. The danger is quieter: skill without a check becomes a habit of hearing only what confirms what you already believed walking in. You stop noticing the difference between a witness telling you the truth and a witness telling you what gets them out of the room. You cannot uninvent the skill. You can decide, each time, what you use it for. That choice is yours alone, made before the questions start, not after the statement is signed.

What’s really going on

The skill itself is not the problem. The problem is whether you still check your own conclusions before you reach for the answer that suits you. Ask, before you open your mouth: am I hunting truth, or hunting agreement? Then choose truth, even when agreement is easier and pays better.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveBefore each interview, write down in one sentence what you expect the witness to say. Read it back after. Notice the gap, or the lack of one.
A moveIn every session, ask at least one question whose answer you do not want.
A moveAfter you get the statement you were aiming for, spend five minutes alone arguing against it. Find its weakest point yourself before someone else does.
A moveSay your goal out loud before you begin: truth, or confirmation. Hold yourself to the one you named.
A moveHand your questions to someone who was not in the room. Ask them plainly if you led the witness. Believe their answer.
